Liam Grange – Martial Artist

Last week, I posted a little sneak peak into a martial arts photo shoot I did with Liam. It has been a busy week in between then and now, with work being like buses and all arriving at once.  I love being busy, but I really wanted to get these images edited as the shoot was so much fun.

Liam is a rare breed,he has a superior talent for martial arts, training from a young age in WTF Taekwondo first under the tuition of his father and then through his time in Korea learning and teaching his art. This would be enough of a path for most martial artists but Liam has gone on to learn various Chinese and Malay martial arts.

Studying amongst other arts.. Taiji (Tai Chi), Malay Silat and Preying Mantis kung fu (shown above). Liam is also part of the National Zhong Ding Lau Hu competition squad, competing in weapons sparring, sparring and forms.

I got to know Liam at one of the Lau Hu Training camps up in Nottingham about a year ago. We did some training together and found that we both have the same philosophy when it comes to partner training.. Bruises are fine, Anger isn’t. Seems simple doesn’t it, but when you’ve just taken an elbow to the head or a kick to the fruits (thank you Joe Abercrombie for that description).. it takes a certain personality and trust to 1) not get angry and 2) say “nice kick” 😉

Anyway, we got talking at the end of the training session and found out that we live quite close to each other in sunny Devon.

We would meet up in Totnes, in the same location as this photo shoot. Training Taiji Pushing Hands, but allowing kicks, take downs and strikes. In fact, not much was ‘disallowed’.. I once remember Liam forcing a take down with his fingers in my eye! Equally, I took a chunk out of Liam’s nose when doing some weapons sparring.

As you can imagine, this is not the kind of training for everyone and neither of us train this way with others.. Trust is everything here.

I consider myself very fortunate to be able to train with Liam, he is a fantastically skilled martial artist with a great attitude towards training.
