Cornerstone Photography is run by me, Scot Baston. I am a commercial photographer based in Kingsbridge, working with businesses across Devon and Cornwall. I photograph property, hospitality, food, products, people and places, creating images for websites, booking platforms, menus, brochures and campaigns.

Clients work directly with me from the first conversation to final delivery. I plan each shoot around what the photographs need to achieve, then make the process calm and straightforward for the people involved.

Images that have a job to do

Commercial photography needs to do more than look attractive. It might need to help someone understand a space, choose a dish, trust a product or feel confident about the people behind a business. Before I pick up the camera, I ask where the images will appear, who needs to respond to them and what that person needs to see.

That thinking shapes the shot list, lighting, composition and final delivery. It also means the photographs are useful across the channels they were created for, rather than simply looking good in a portfolio.

Careful preparation makes better photographs

The details change with every subject. Property photography needs controlled lines and an honest sense of space. Food needs to look fresh and true to what the kitchen serves. Products need accurate colour and texture, while people need enough direction to feel comfortable without looking over-posed.

I prepare for those differences before the shoot and keep checking them as the work progresses. That care produces a consistent set of images and reduces avoidable corrections later.

What it is like to work with me

Every project starts with a conversation about the business, the audience and where the photographs will be used. From there, I recommend a practical shot list and schedule, including what needs to be prepared before I arrive.

  • Clear planning: We agree the priorities, location, timings and intended uses before the shoot.
  • A calm working style: I give direction when it is useful and adapt when the location, weather or working day changes.
  • Consistent editing: The final set is carefully selected and edited to feel coherent without making the subject look artificial.
  • Practical delivery: Files are supplied in suitable formats for their intended print and digital uses, with timings agreed in advance.

How I found photography

I did not grow up certain that I would become a photographer. That came later. At 32, I sold what I owned and went travelling, moving from the heat of Malaysia to winter in Beijing, across Bolivia and Peru, and eventually to New Zealand.

In New Zealand, photography stopped being simply a way to record the journey and became something I wanted to understand properly. I was surrounded by remarkable landscapes, but learning to photograph them taught me to pay attention to light, shape, colour and the details that make one view feel different from another.

The way I work today

More than 15 years later, my work has developed into a clean, crisp and naturally vibrant style that suits the places, food and businesses I photograph across the South West. I favour accurate colour, controlled light and images that feel polished without losing the character of the subject.

I still approach each commission with the same curiosity that drew me to photography in the first place. The difference now is the experience to work efficiently, anticipate problems and deliver a dependable set of images for commercial use.

Photography and website support

My wife and I also run Cornerstone Websites. When a project needs both photography and a new or updated website, the two can be planned together so the images suit the layout, content and technical requirements from the start.

You can use either service independently. When they are combined, there is one joined-up plan for the photography, website and delivery of the finished assets.
