Styled shoots & creative portraits
in Devon
A clear idea, a considered setting and photographs with purpose

A styled shoot starts with an idea: a hair collection, a particular look, a person’s work or a story you want the photographs to tell. I work with stylists, creative businesses and individuals in Devon to plan portraits and editorial images around that idea.
The portfolio below brings together carefully styled hair and beauty portraits and photographs of a blacksmith in his working environment. The approach changes with the subject, but the planning is the same: agree the look, choose a suitable setting and understand how the images will be used.

Hair, beauty and editorial portraits
When the hairstyle, colour or finish is the subject, the light and camera angle need to support it. We can plan close portraits, side profiles and wider photographs that show the styling as a complete look.
Before the session, we will discuss your references, backgrounds and the people involved. Agreeing who is responsible for hair, make-up, clothing and props helps everyone prepare. Tell me whether the images are for a salon website, a portfolio, social media or an editorial submission, so the brief includes the right crops and requirements.

Portraits with a sense of place
A portrait can include the work, tools and surroundings that help explain who someone is. In a workshop or another meaningful location, we can combine a considered portrait with photographs of a person absorbed in what they do.
For makers and independent businesses, that might mean close details, an activity sequence and a wider view of the space. We will plan around access, the working environment and anything that should stay out of the photographs. You remain responsible for the activity; I concentrate on light, composition and timing.

Turning a creative idea into a practical shoot
You do not need to arrive with a finished production plan. A few reference images, a description of the mood and a clear purpose are enough to start the conversation. We can then turn the idea into a manageable shot list.
Location, clothing, props and the number of looks all affect what can be achieved. We will agree these before the day, including who is taking part and what each person is providing. Any requirements for credits, image use or publication should be part of that discussion.
Planning your styled shoot
The best preparation is specific to the photographs you need.
- Start with the purpose: Explain what you want the images to communicate and where they will appear. Share references and any required layouts or crops.
- Agree the practical details: We will discuss the location, looks, participants, props and responsibilities before putting together the shoot plan.
- Leave room to refine: On the day, we can review the light, angles and small details as we work through the agreed brief.
Image use, file requirements and delivery arrangements can be agreed as part of the quote. If a publication or collaborator has particular requirements, include them when you enquire.
